Opacityindex is a kitchen remodeling company working in Irvine, and most of what we do happens in narrow rooms. Townhome galleys, condo kitchens with a single window at the far end, and the long, tight runs of cabinets that attached housing across the city was built with. A lot of owners come to us assuming the only way to fix a kitchen like that is to tear out a wall. Usually it is not.

The shape itself is fine. Two parallel counters with a walkway between them keep everything within reach, and plenty of professional kitchens are laid out the same way for that reason. What makes a galley miserable is a set of small decisions stacked on top of each other: an oven door that hits the dishwasher, a refrigerator that sticks out into the aisle, cabinet doors that swing into your knees, a fan that moves air around instead of out of the room, and a single ceiling light that throws your own shadow onto the cutting board.

How We Work

We measure before we draw. The number that matters most in a galley is the clear aisle between the finished fronts, and we take it at the handles, not at the wall. Then we sketch every door open, so you can see what collides before anything is ordered.

We are honest about scope. If your cabinet boxes are sound, we will tell you that refacing them is an option. If your kitchen needs light and a real hood more than it needs new cabinets, we will say that too.

We plan around the association. In an attached Irvine home the HOA often has a say before any work begins, particularly for exterior vents and shared plumbing. We prepare drawings and product information for that review, and we handle City of Irvine permits and inspections when walls, circuits or plumbing change.
